On a clear night sky of the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, it is believed that mankind on earth can see a shadow of a man chopping on a huge tree.  This man is believed to be Wu Gang of the Han Dynasty, a lumberjack by trade.  To obtain immortality, he took on the job of chopping down the Osmanthus tree in front of the Moon Palace.  Each time Wu Gang chopped it down, the tree would immediately spring back to its original form.  Thus each Mid Autumn Festival, Wu Gang must once again chop down the tree in front of the Moon Palace.
